The DB9 started production in 2005, inheriting in upgraded form, the same 6 litre V12 twin overhead camshaft engine used in its predecessor model, the DB7 Vantage.
It also inherited, from the Vanquish, the same basic aluminium platform, to which body panels were bonded. In its much-modified form this was described as Vertical/Horizontal, meaning that its design concept would allow the platform to be readily modifiable to cater for different models as they evolved. It was also a step change in stiffness, thereby endowing the DB9 with an extremely stiff platform and with therefore, a superb basis for excellent road behaviour. The weight distribution is an ideal 50-50 front to rear, thereby further enhancing the dynamic abilities of the model. The standard transmission options were retained, with an auto box with paddle shifters to allow manual intervention or with a traditional 6 speed manual gearbox as a customer option.

Styled by Henrik Fischer, it built on the same styling cues inherited from the DB7, but brought it right up to date with the best of contemporary design. The DB9 was the first Aston Martin to be manufactured at Aston Martin’s new home at Gaydon, Warwickshire. The DB9 remains in production.

The DB9 inherited a new interior, following the design cues from the Vanquish, but with bespoke Aston Martin switchgear and controls. General interior fit and finish was radically improved. On launch, the DB9 received rave reviews, not only for its styling, but for its abilities on the road. Designed as a Grand Tourer, its dynamic abilities, comfortable interior and exhilarating performance make it a wonderful car in which travel, and with a style that is quintessentially Aston Martin, of quiet understated beauty and supreme elegance.
