Me and my car - François Monin

This month we feature François Monin, business entrepreneur and owner of Blue Neurones, a marketing and communications agency based in Paris. François bought his DB6 from the Aston Workshop at the beginning of this year.

“I live in Paris and although this is the most romantic city in the world, the traffic is a nightmare. I actually live in Montmartre which is even more beautiful, and a dream destination for many people, but unfortunately there is never anywhere to park. So when I moved to Paris as a student in 1978, I chose more convenient forms of transport: bikes, scooters, solex, and motorbikes, and since then I’ve never felt the need to buy a car.

Then, at the start of the year I had a discussion with my business partner who owns a Lotus Elan. We were talking about the best way to get around the city and he said something which I had never thought about and which really made me think. ‘In Paris, the best combination is a scooter AND a classic car.’ And of course, as usual, he was right.

I started to think about the fact that I’ve always told myself, that if I ever buy a car, I would only buy an Aston Martin. Not a new one, but one of those extraordinary cars from David Brown’s time, particularly a DB6, which I find more elegant than the DB5.

So with this in mind, I turned to the internet. The first car I saw was a beautiful blue DB6 on www.aston.co.uk. I searched through all the websites for the Aston dealers but I couldn’t stop thinking about the lovely blue car I’d first seen. More out of intuition than any rational thought process, I called the Aston Workshop and made an appointment to see the manager, Paul, to look at the beautiful blue DB6. I took my old friend with me for a second opinion as he owns a Lancia Flavia and knows a lot more about classic cars than I do. (To be honest, I don’t know anything about cars!)

Oh! The first time I drove it….wow! I was so nervous sitting next to Paul as I drove the DB6 and as he asked me if it was my first Aston Martin, I hardly dared to tell him it was my first car! When he heard this, I’m not sure who was more nervous! I decided to buy the car almost immediately after driving it.

When Paul handed me the keys, he told me that the name of the beautiful blue car was Sophie. Personally I think this name is too quiet for such a car so I have chosen to rename my car Charlotte after my good friend who named her first child (and my godson) after me. And finally, after all these years of travelling by two wheels, I am the proud owner of a beautifully restored Aston Martin DB6 which I now love to drive through France every weekend.”
