restored DB5 from the Aston Workshop

Jay Scanlan is the owner of a Facility Management company, and lives by the south coast in Brighton and Hove with his wife and daughter. He currently drives a Range Rover but has recently invested in a restored DB5 from the Aston Workshop.

“I’ve always wanted to own a DB5. I know it’s a bit of a James Bond clich? but I think the styling is fantastic and the cars just don’t have a bad angle whichever way you look at them.

I’ve always been a fan of classic 20th century styling from chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames to the sleek, smooth style of Bauhaus. >From a design point of view, the DB5s are just classically beautiful and I’ve always admired the way they look.

I just happened to stumble across the Aston Workshop website one day when I was looking on the internet. I had been toying with the idea of splashing out and buying a DB5 for a while but it wasn’t until I saw this beautiful rose grey car that I knew that I had to see it. To top it all, this particular car was automatic, and as I’m getting older a comfortable drive is increasingly important to me, I decided to call the workshop to make an appointment.

I travelled up to Beamish to visit the workshop and view the car in March this year. The team showed me round the facilities so I could see the state of the art paint and body workshop and all the restoration facilities, and then they showed me the DB5. It was even more stunning in reality and after (not much!) deliberation I bought the car.

A few months later and with the help of Bob, Anthony and the team, my DB5 is now stunning. It has been totally restored back to its former glory! It certainly took some work - the whole engine was overhauled, the body was re-sprayed, the car has had new wheels, has been totally re-upholstered and fitted with some top of the range gadgets. (It’s a bloke thing.) The DB5 now has a fantastic Mexico-style period radio compact with a satellite navigation system and an i-pod connection – although they wouldn’t let me put missile launchers in the head lights!

The service I received from the Aston Workshop was second to none from start to finish. They were there through every stage of the process, keeping me updated and informed of the progress. They’re a great bunch of guys and I really commend what they’re doing by keeping these amazing cars alive. It would be such a shame to take a classic Aston Martin and ruin it with modern restoration techniques – the majority of these cars were manufactured by hand with painstaking care and attention to detail, and I think it’s great that the Aston Workshop are taking the same care over the restoration of their cars.

I would without doubt recommend buying an Aston Martin from the Aston Workshop. It has been worth every penny as I now own a little piece of history and driving my DB5 is such a great experience every time I get behind the wheel.
