Me and My Car – Eric Coutts

It’s taken more than 40 years but Eric Coutts has finally achieved his dream of owning a classic Aston Martin.

Thanks to the team at the Aston Workshop Eric, who lives near Versailles on the outskirts of Paris, will soon be taking delivery of his perfectly restored 1964 Aston Martin DB5.

Aged just five, Eric fell in love playing with his Dinky toy DB5 – the model made famous by James Bond - and dreamed of one day having his own.

He said: “The design is just fantastic – it is an icon. Newer designs can’t compete with it – they just don’t have the same charm.

“The cars of today have a much more aggressive look to them, whereas the DB5 is beautiful to look at, well-designed and well-made.”

The car, which the Aston Workshop found in Germany, has been painstakingly refurbished in a process that took almost 18 months.

After being stripped down to its chassis, the car was totally rebuilt from scratch to Eric’s specifications.

Air conditioning, electric power steering and a five-speed gearbox were all fitted, before the interior was kitted out in black leather and the body sprayed in the iconic Silver Birch shade – as favoured by 007 himself.

Eric, a banker, is also the proud owner of a Ferrari Scagletti and an Audi A5 - but his itch for an Aston classic just wouldn’t go away.

He said: “I thought now was the time – opportunities to find a vintage Aston are becoming fewer and farther between and I wanted to get one before it was too late.

“The Aston is my dream car. It’s what I have wanted ever since I was a boy.”
