Rob Keereweer, a daring Dutchman, had his dream of an Aston Martin Zagato recreated by the Aston Workshop towards the end of last year. Last month he joined the famous Italian Mille Miglia race from Brescia to Rome and back to enjoy his Aston to the full.
“As a non-official participant I was able to fully use the potential of the Aston and I am happy to say that the car drove fantastic and never missed a beat. Furthermore the road handling was excellent and me and my friend Hans really enjoyed the car. I think this is a compliment to The Aston Workshop and the team that build my car.”
Apart from the excellent driving experience Rob enjoyed with his newly built Aston Martin Zagato, joining the Mille Miglia had also its pleasures along the way, as Rob excitedly continues “when I stayed in Brescia in Hotel Arzaga the complete Mercedes crew was there. Sir Stirling Moss, Kimi Raikonen and David Coultard stayed in the same hotel. Mercedes had taken the original 300 SLR from 1955 which was driven by Stirling Moss, when he took the fastest time ever on the Mille Miglia in 1955. Mercedes had also brought the brand new McLaren Mercedes SLR Moss specification. The original 300 SLR was driven by Coultard in this year’s Mille Miglia while Raikonen drove the new one.”
The Aston Workshop is pleased to have provided Rob with a Zagato that may render many more of such unforgettable memories. The Aston Workshop offers DB4 GT Zagato recreations to special order. Our recreations are faithful reproductions of the original cars, of which only 19 were made between 1960 and 1962.
The DB4 GT Zagato was commissioned by Aston Martin in 1960 for competition purposes. They were intended to be Aston Martin’s answer to the then all conquering Ferrari GT Berlinetta and the first few cars used a considerably lightened DB4 GT chassis, and clothed in a 18 and 20 gauge lightweight aluminium body shell. Styled by Zagato, they proved not very successful in their intended competition role. However, due to the reduced weight of the Zagato and their striking beauty and form, Aston Martin offered to build additional cars to order, either to be used as privateers in competition or as road cars, each one being manufactured to special order. In all 19 chassis were commissioned by Aston Martin, each one being slightly different from any of the other cars.
Our recreations all start with a genuine and original DB4 chassis that is then totally reconstructed and shortened to DB4 GT specification and they retain the chassis number of the original donor car. Using bucks that are precise copies of the original Zagato body, a totally new body is then fabricated and fitted to the chassis. A new engine block to 4.2 or larger size is acquired and assembled with a DB4 GT twin plug cylinder head and with fast road camshafts.
The interior and body fittings are painstakingly fabricated and manufactured as a precise reproduction of the original Zagato. This includes such details as the windscreen frame, headlight cowls, door handles, and the unique dashboard and seats. The cars can be assembled with a whole range of additional upgrades, from air conditioning, special seats and sound systems etc to fast road suspension and power steering, five and six speed transmissions and wheels to customer choice. Gearing of the car is to customer preference, just like the original cars.
Customers can either provide their own DB4 car as the basis for a Zagato recreation or we can look for a suitable donor chassis. One of the most beautiful cars of its age ever made, customers are encouraged to discuss their interest at the earliest stage. Price is by negotiation and is dependent on the final specification agreed.
