Bonhams returned to Works Service for their 10th Anniversary Auction this May.
Despite the prevailing economic climate and predictions of doom and gloom, 200 lots of automobilia changed hands for very respectable prices, most notable would be the Racing Archives of Lionel Martin himself. They are believed to have been saved for the UK by as noted Aston Collector, and Aston workshop customer.
Once the car section came to start, after luncheon, auctioneer James Knight seemed to carry on just where he left off in 2008. Once the amazingly eye catching specially finished gold and platinum DB7 had crossed the block to a telephone bidder, the prices climbed steadily.
Restoration projects still seem to find favour with the Aston buying public, the ones on offer here both soaring well over their apparently generous estimates:-
1963 Aston Martin DB4 Series V Vantage Sports Saloon Chassis no. DB4/1143/R Engine no. 370/1125/SS (requiring a full restoration)
Sold for £84,000 inclusive of Buyer's Premium
1958 Aston Martin DB MkIII Sports Saloon Chassis no. AM300/3/1628 Engine no. DBA/1270
Sold for £43,300 inclusive of Buyer's Premium
Amongst the “later” cars, most worthy of note was a Vantage Volante “X” pack. Presenting in what is usually regarded as “non” Aston bright red, it still sold for a mighty price:-
One owner from new,1989 Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante ‘X Pack’ Convertible Chassis no. SCFCV81V6KTL15802 Engine no. V/580/5802/X
Sold for £129,100 inclusive of Buyer's Premium
These results, and the others achieved on the day, made for a sale which grossed comfortably into 7 figures, and which emphasised once again, as if re-emphasis were necessary, that Aston Martins, especially those of the type specialised in here at The Aston Workshop, are more than holding their own in the depressed world financial markets, and are, indeed, clearly appreciating assets.
